If you’re not an afficianado of the 1997 movie Gattaca, you really ought to be. It’s a very prescient movie in its portrayal of how DNA testing is likely to play out in our lives in the not too distant future. We’re not just talking your standard paternity test, either.
DNA tests, in the movie, are used to vet for job applicants, insurance claims, longevity, schooling, mating, etc.. Is this a future for which we are all headed?
The scary part, though, is its portrayal of a DNA or genetic underclass, those who did not come from a privileged background. Though optimistic in its ending, as the genetically disadvantaged hero wins through in the end… for most of the rest of the population, the genetic game is played through the system, not around it.
