Running a business

It was about 30 years ago, but my parents ran a grocery store for about 2 years… well, I should say ‘ran it into the ground’. They made a lot of mistakes with the financing of the store, and allowed people who should have known better to make the decisions.

However, it was exciting at the beginning. When we started up, we got our candy store started, our first cash register (a precursor of the mmf drawer series), and my parents had the privilege of doing the accounts!

What a nightmare that must have been: remember this was 1978 and everything still had to be done by hand. No computers were on hand with spreadsheets or whatnot to automate the process.

It’s a staggering difference in our business: keeping a track of expenses and income has become almost mundane with the use of modern software, though we do hire a book keeper to sort things out for us!

But in 1978, it was all by hand! And my mother did it all, though she has almost no head for numbers! What does that prove?
