Great seeing you guys! Do come back!
Well, I have a great friend from Taiwan who is now married and living in NYC, it was great to see them again in Taichung over the past few weeks, but I just got an email from them after they want back to the States. This was Cynthia and Alan’s first time to bring Ian back to Taiwan to see family and friends! I quite like this picture because it makes Ian look like the captain of a spaceship!
Anyway, they all live in New York City, and I was thrilled to find out they had bought a house in the city at a good price. Of course, with the recent property weakness, I’m hoping that they didn’t overpay for their property. I do remember buying our house, and I was surprised how quickly we filled it up with our stuff. If they’re anything like us, they’ll have needed some good New York movers to help them move their stuff. We needed two large trucks for ours, and we made the trip twice. After living here 8 years, I’ve got no idea how many vans we’d need now…!

It’s true, fashion isn’t one of my real strengths! But I do have an interest in the business size of this… and I definitely enjoyed the behind-the-scenes style of the movie, The Devil Wears Prada.
Of course, choosing the right fashion niche in the online business world is a challenge. But with more and more women becoming horizontally challenged (whatever happened to Atkins?), plus size lingerie could be an excellent niche. After all, what woman doesn’t want to feel good about themselves? LingerieDiva is a wonderful example of how elegant and simple an e-commerce site can be. Take a look for yourself.
Why do I like the site? Well here’s a list of reasons:
- good taste in color scheme: soft pastels
- generous and fast-to-download pictures used throughout
- easy and obvious navigation bars at top, side and bottom
- fast and responsive server
- concerned with customers: free shipping, security, concerns over sizes, and customer returns.
Classy, well-organized… I just wish more sites were as good as this one!

Passports and travel in Taiwan
One of the problems of living in Taiwan is the lack of a consulate for most countries, so for long time foreign residents of Taiwan whose passport expires, most countries handle renewal of passports in nearby countries such as Thailand or HongKong where full embassy services are available.
I had to do that a few years when my passport expired, and I’ll have to do it again in a few years (my! how the time passes). Fortunately most Western countries hold some kind of diplomatic relationship with Taiwan so they have representative offices that can help you handle these kinds of affairs. There are a few places where you can find out this information such as here.

Christine is sitting on the Taiwan HSR eagerly clutching her ticket, as we await departure from Taipei on the 11:00 express to Kaohsiung. It only stops a couple of times, and we arrive in Kaohsiung Zuoying Station on time in only 1 hour 36 minutes.
Inside the train the coaches are wide, fairly comfortable and quiet. We booked tickets so we pretty much had the carriage to ourselves for the largest part of the journey. The train is divided unofficially into three classes: Business Class, Reserved Standard, and Unreserved Standard. While the first distinction is obvious, the second is less so until you find out what it really means, courtesy of rather brusque treatment by the stewardess.
Lunch is served (at NT$120). Two traditional lunchboxes served with Pork or Chicken. A little lackluster in flavor or heat, but we were eager to eat them nevertheless. Who can resist the charm of having eaten the fastest lunchboxes in Taiwan.
Another surprise: Photography from the cabin was actually quite possible and resulted in a lot of images that showed the countryside. Things go so fast, so I had to cut down on the pointing and speed up the clicking. Still…
And in the tunnels, it was quite eerie… like this picture taken in the window!
Finally, I managed to photograph the speed we were traveling at: on occasion it reached 293km/h but most of the time hovered between 250-280km/h.
We finally arrived in Kaohsiung.
