FET soft launches WiMAX network in Taichung

Taiwanese mobile operator Far EasTone (FET) has launched a limited trial across its WiMAX network in Taichung, central Taiwan, charging users a monthly fee of TWD599 (USD18.50) for the service, which the company hopes to launch commercially in early 2010. FET aims to take a 10% share of the household broadband market in Taichung when it officially launches the service.  (more)

Taiwan ‘considering world’s first junk food tax’

TAIPEI — Taiwan is planning the world’s first tax on junk food in a bid to encourage the public to eat healthily and cut obesity rates, a report said Monday.

The Bureau of Health Promotion is drafting a bill to levy the special tax on food deemed unhealthy, such as sugary drinks, candy, cakes, fast food and alcohol, said the Apple Daily. (more)
