Who do you turn to for advice, help and suggestions?

One of the interesting things about life in Taiwan is the way that people in your family (albeit extended) are often the ones people turn to for all sorts of advice, whether it’s investing advice, medical advice, even English tips.
My sister-in-law is one of those who in past times worked for Aetna before they were sold, resold, and resold. She and my wife conspired to provide some great life insurance information.
But that’s the way it is here: family and friends are often sources for personal and business help. All and good, if they actually know what they are talking about. Unfortunately, many people tend to view their family advice as an authority by itself, over and above ‘real’ experts.

Well, I finally did it. I went and bought a new pc: The Asus Eee Box EB1502 to try out. I’m still not sure that this PC will be able to replace my desktop. What’s good: the size, the fact I get to try out Windows 7 on it, and I uploaded my first Flip Video on the system, the wireless keyboard and mouse, and the fact I can set up Ready Boost, and the fact it tries to be user friendly! What’s different: nicer interface, but there are still some goofy features of Windows that I don’t like… the auto-turn on for Aero Basic, the fact that some software doesn’t work properly yet (including Windows Live Writer), and the fact I can’t easily import video to Movie Maker yet. What’s bad: really not much, things happen much faster, and the interface is much refined over XP,… I also hate the fact that I have to remove the trial edition of Office (again). So anyway here is my first Flip Video: I promise you won’t like it! Now was that worth it… looking at that $6.00 cappucino (it’s really good!)
Toyota Prius

Finally, Prius is coming to Taiwan. We get to take part in the global environment saving efforts by buying friendly cars. I did price it, it’s about NT$1.2 million for the car, so it’s about double the conventional price.
The fuel savings at the moment won’t pay off the car within a reasonable time, as far as I can work out. But with a higher retail price, possibly you won’t lose a lot of money on its resale.
I’m curious to know why the retail price in Taiwan is nearly 50% higher than in the US for the base models. It’s weird.

Updates on missing posts: they’re not missing really

Dear readers, if you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’ll know that I often post on Taiwan Life, well, I’ve decided to move as many as there are decent posts to my new Taipei City Guide Blog: a blog about the great things that Taipei (and Taiwan) have to offer the world.
So, if you click a link or post and end up there, don’t be worried! Just finish the story and come on back! Or stay there if you wish!
It’s not well designed yet, but we’re working to bring it upto speed, and get a semi-decent site functioning for 2011.

London Parks: A Balmy Summer 2010

Thought you’d like to see this. We rented some deckchairs and enjoyed the sun in the later part of the afternoon! It was quite sybaritic, just sitting there in the sun, enjoying an ice cream cone with family and friends!
One of the interesting things about Hyde Park is that there are often horses seen in the park, either with full horse tack for a parade, or with show horses. You can even see horses being riden by children and instructors! It’s quite wonderful to see how, in the center of a city, such graceful animals can co-exist and enjoy the open spaces.
It does remind me of how parks like Hyde Park, once part of the royal estates, were actually wilderness full of real animals (not just suited ones!): bears, deer, horses and much more… and they were hunting grounds, if you go back far enough in history!
Worries: it’s a craiglist/facebook world!

Some of my readers might worry about why I’m telling you about our London trip just now… nearly a month after it happened!
In short, when people know you’re travelling … it’s an open invitation to trouble while you’re away. So we are trying to exercise a little caution about this by not publicising our trip any more.
Lack of ‘freshness’ or ‘it just happened’ Twitter like updates are a small price to pay for this … but I’d rather come back to a house that’s intact to one that’s been sold on Craigslist or Robbed by those using geolocation tools on Facebook (Facebook Places!).
So there!
London Parks: Good footwear needed

When we were in the UK this summer, we thoroughly enjoyed our trip to London. One of the first things, though, that Christine did was head to the parks in London, which are amongst the best we’ve ever visited.
In fact if you were really park-minded, you could walk all the way from the Thames to the Albert Hall pretty much staying inside the confines of the parks: St. James’ park, Green park, Hyde Park,… but for such heavy duty walking you’ll need a pair of good walking shoes that can handle both grass, tarmac, and cobbles!
Would London be a match for mbt shoes? The only way to find out is try them out! Who knows what I’ll wear next time I go… as long as it isn’t cement walking shoes… I’m not worried!

Exclusive customs counters for foreign residents make airport clearance easier

The National Immigration Agency (NIA) of the Ministry of the Interior added two exclusive counters for foreign resident certificate holders at Taoyuan International Airport’s Terminal 2 on June 11 this year (2010). Ghost Month and Zhongyuan General Salvation Ceremonies
鬼月與中元節
According to Chinese folk tradition, the seventh month of the lunar calendar is known as Ghost Month. The 15th day of Ghost Month is Zhongyuan Festival, when every household has to prepare meat, fruit, fresh flowers and other sacrificial offerings for their deceased loved ones, as well as other lost souls who have no living descendants left on earth. This practice is known as “Zhongyuan Pudu,” or General Salvation. On the last day of Ghost Month, a special “Grappling with Ghosts” event will be held. 《full text》

Shaken, not stirred!

If you live in an earthquake zone, and you experience this kind of shaking,
you’ll know the importance of buildings that stay up even under duress, especially when the underlying structure of the building is weak.
We live in a fairly strongly built building with a lot of concrete and iron and we get shaken around quite a lot.
There are also many factories, workshops and stores that use a steel building structure to ease building costs, and complete construction faster. But you have to wonder how they stay up.
Odd thing is: I can’t remember seeing one that just fell down! Perhaps the steel is more flexible and strong than other kinds of structure.

Foreign business travelers recommended by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and those holding Business Travel Cards (ABTCs) issued by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) may use these exclusive counters to enjoy rapid customs clearance.《full text》
