London Eateries: Places We Ate
Jul 20 at 6:06am by ObverseView
Our trip this year will include many of the following destinations:
Natural History Museum: Nice little cafe inside the Exhibition Road entrance. Nice food, a little quieter. Food standard/value – reasonably good. Nice to know we’re supporting a great Museum. We had a salmon quiche with two salads, and soda. The quiche was nicely prepared with good salads. Portions were small, so it seemed appropriate for women diet pills not withstanding. For a hungry man or woman not on a diet, you might need to double up on the salad!
Wasabi: Just opposite Harrod’s Department Store. Unremarkable sushi served by a woman with a very surly attitude to customers. Small, expensive Sushi that’s been displayed all day, and the rice is a little hard. AND you have to pay for the extra Wasabi and Soy Sauce: Ridiculous. Can’t recommend this place. Harrod’s Sushi should be better. Also, all the sushi is wrapped in plastic, making it difficult to open and likely to destroy the sushi’s integrity. I just don’t recall having had good sushi EVER in London… either portions are meager, the texture is wrong, or the seafood is not fresh. Come to Taipei for great Sushi, even in 7-11!
Harrods Food Court: A crayfish sandwich on flatbread. The sandwich looked like it was worth the GBP4.50 and the contents were filling. It did lack a little in the flavor department, and both of us wondered if the CrayFish were fresh or (likely) frozen before cooking and serving. A piquante sauce with a little hot sauce would have been a good compliment to this sandwich.
Overall, the quality of the food we ate today was quite good, though perhaps we should shop more selectively, and plan our eatings more carefully for maximum flavor.

Vietnamese Coffee
Jun 20 at 1:01am by ObverseView
Vietnamese coffee may not be much of a treat if you’re feeling depressed or suffering from ‘the blues’ but I swear a little quality Vietnamese coffee will really cheer you: it’s either the sugar in the condensed milk, or the hazlenut flavored coffee that wafts out of the unique coffee plunger. I’m not sure which, but well worth it!

Julia vs. Julie
Mar 14 at 2:02am by ObverseView
Yesterday we discovered the flick Julie and Julia on MOD TV. And I have to give it a total thumbs up for Meryl Streep’s role as Julia Childs. It is a great little movie for both guys and gals. Check the Movie Preview.
I quite liked the fact that the movie was based on two real stories, one of which you can find in Julia Child’s TV shows and books, and the other online!
However, Julia Child didn’t seem to be particularly amused by the project – Judith Jones, said in an interview: “Flinging around four-letter words when cooking isn’t attractive, to me or Julia. She didn’t want to endorse it. What came through on the blog was somebody who was doing it almost for the sake of a stunt. She would never really describe the end results, how delicious it was, and what she learned. Julia didn’t like what she called ‘the flimsies.’ She didn’t suffer fools, if you know what I mean.” [Wikipedia]
Here’s another video of Julia Child’s cooking skills, she’s quite handy with a cleaver!
While her blog may have been popular, it seems Julie Powell’s book aren’t similarly highly regarded. So it makes me wonder how talented the script writers were to turn the book (condensed) into an enjoyable film. But the enjoyment may have been as much at Streep’s performing ‘Bon Appetit’ loudly in a falsetto repeatedly throughout the movie. Very funny.

My favorite cappuccino in Taiwan: Young Door Coffee Shop, Jingshan near. Keelung
Jan 3 at 11:11pm by ObverseView
This drink is perhaps my favorite coffee drink in all of Taiwan, a place called YoungDoor, near Jingshan on the North East Coast. They really do make good cappuccinos. For more information on YoungDoor, check out this post in Chinese. Great pictures, too.
You’ll appreciate the decor of the place, in its Mediterranean style, with lots of white walls and blue accents throughout. With its location right beside the sea, I can’t help think some copper tile with sea animals placed around the counter area would help to add extra ambience to the whole atmosphere. In fact, the whole mediterranean theme has been done and redone all along the coast as new restaurants open up.
The North East Coast is a very attractive place for Taipei City dwellers, it’s near, the weather’s usually milder than Taipei in the summer, and there are beaches all over the place. If you have a motorcycle or a car, access is relatively easy, but there is a fairly frequent bus service, too.

Alternate Uses: #1 Pantyhose for Milk Tea from Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, it seems that their lacha is made with a unique tool: pantyhose is used to strain the leaves.
Now that is weird. What other items get weird or wonderful uses? Drop me a mail with your answers!

Which restaurant is better?
Feb 22 at 7:07am by ObverseView
Two restaurants in Sanchih sit side-by-side but only one is worth visiting… on the famous bay area at Chien-Shui-Wan. We love going there because it’s a great place to eat, drink and watch the sun go down. While we differ on how see the restaurants, yesterday we went to two restaurants which, despite sitting next to each other, could not differ more dramatically in style, quality and value for money.
One does delicious food served with flair, one serves packet soup. One has warm decor, the other cool decor. One has staff that are friendly and outgoing, the other the staff are cold and withdrawn.
Can you guess which one is worth visiting? Could this be the start of a series of reviews on my blog? I wonder…
Check out the blogs, decide for yourself, then go visit! I will reveal the answer …

Keeping Cool in a HOT Taiwan!
Jul 16 at 1:01am by ObverseView

This is a wonderful Taiwanese Ice-cream that is decidedly delicious and cool on a VERY hot summer afternoon or evening.
If you go to Shihlin Night Market, you’ll find this version of creamed ice with five or six flavors, including Peanut, Strawberry, and a range of flavors suitable for Taiwanese tastes.
There are different kinds of ‘ice’ including shaved ice, ice fruit ‘sorbet’, and bubble ice with different toppings. I’ve had them for years, and I can honestly say, they are great!
