Are you a victim of the upgrade cycle?

How many hard drives do you have? I was quite surprised. My desk at school now has five different drives sitting on it. Some of them are quite old, but still functional. ALL of them are IDE drives! So it’s difficult to know what to do with them.

I bought a couple of external drive cases for four of them, then I stripped down three other old PCs and found three MORE drives! I can put two of the larger ones in similar drive cases for a grand total of 500GB of data!

With data accumulating at an ever faster speed, it’s important to keep backups of your data in formats that are still readable years later. But each additional disk creates an additional problem of a possible disk failure or unreadable format at some point.

That’s why I’m hoping this computing in the cloud takes off: it would emancipate me from the hardware part of the technology upgrade cycle! That would be great! But at the moment, we’re all part of the ever-upgrade cycle!
